A client called me on a Tuesday evening because her three-year-old Cattle Dog mix, Biscuit, had started shredding the baseboards by the back door every afternoon around four. Same time, every day. She’d already tried a calming chew from the pet store — the kind with a cartoon of a sleeping Golden Retriever on the bag — and it hadn’t touched it. When we talked through her day, the pattern jumped out fast: four o’clock was when the mail carrier’s truck idled at the corner for a few minutes before moving on. Biscuit wasn’t generally anxious. She was pattern-triggered, and no chew, however well-formulated, was going to out-argue a truck engine she’d learned to dread.

I bring this up first because it’s the mistake I see most in my practice: owners reach for a chew before they’ve named what’s actually happening. Dogs get labeled “anxious” the way people get labeled “stressed,” as a catch-all, when the underlying picture is usually more specific — noise sensitivity, separation distress, situational fear, or a low-grade nervous-system pattern that shows up as pacing and licking more than obvious panic. Those two lenses point to different plans, and a chew picked off a shelf rarely accounts for either.

Walk down the calming aisle and you’ll see the same handful of ingredients rotate through different bags: chamomile, L-theanine, ashwagandha, valerian, melatonin, sometimes hemp-derived compounds. The marketing tends to treat them as interchangeable “relaxation” ingredients. They aren’t, and the evidence behind each one sits at a different level of maturity.

Chamomile is the oldest of the bunch and the least studied in dogs specifically. A recent review looking across species noted that “for the remaining species, evidence is derived mainly from preclinical studies or traditional use,” in Biomedicines — which is a polite way of saying we’re leaning on centuries of herbal tradition and animal-model work, not dog-specific clinical trials. That doesn’t make it useless. It makes it a support-level tool, not a proven treatment, and I frame it that way with owners: chamomile may help support a relaxed state, full stop, not “will calm your dog down.”

Ashwagandha has a stronger human evidence base behind it. A systematic review of multiple randomized controlled trials, summarized in Cureus, concluded that ashwagandha has a moderate positive impact on stress reduction and cognitive performance — again, that’s human data, extrapolated to dogs the way most veterinary herbal medicine currently has to be, because the trial infrastructure for canine anxiety supplements is thin. L-theanine sits somewhere in between: human research summarized in Molecular Psychiatry found benefit in most anxiety contexts studied, “except for one study on psychotic anxiety (SMD = 0.54; 400 mg/day for 8 weeks)” — a dose and population that has nothing to do with a nervous dog on a car ride, but it does tell you the compound has measurable, dose-dependent effects on human anxiety physiology worth taking seriously as a starting point for canine use.

The counterargument I take seriously

The strongest pushback I hear from colleagues, and it’s a fair one, is that structure/function ingredients are being asked to do a job — meaningfully reduce fear or anxiety — that in most cases hasn’t been proven in dogs at the doses actually used on the label. That’s true, and I won’t argue around it. Where I land differently is that I don’t think the honest answer is “skip supplements entirely.” I think the honest answer is that a chew is a low-risk, low-cost lever you can pull while you fix the levers that actually move the needle: exercise timing, predictability of the daily schedule, desensitization to the specific trigger, and in patterned cases like Biscuit’s, addressing the trigger directly rather than medicating around it. A calming chew that may help support relaxation is a reasonable adjunct. It is not a substitute for figuring out what’s driving the behavior.

Biscuit, for what it’s worth, didn’t need a stronger chew. She needed her walk moved to four o’clock, so she was out front, engaged and sniffing, exactly when the mail truck idled — turning a dreaded moment into a neutral one within about three weeks. That’s a training and scheduling fix, not a supplement fix, and it’s the kind of thing I’d rather an owner try first.

How I’d actually pick one, if I were choosing

Skip the bag with the sleepy dog on the front and read the supplement facts panel instead. You want to see the actual named actives — chamomile, L-theanine, ashwagandha — listed with a milligram amount per chew, not folded into a vague “calming blend” where the total blend weight is disclosed but not the individual doses. A label that won’t tell you how much L-theanine is actually in there is asking you to trust marketing over pharmacology, and you don’t have to.

Match the ingredient to the pattern you’re seeing, not just the word “calm.” A dog who’s tense, reactive, and quick to snap at a passing dog reads to me more like the Liver Qi stagnation pattern I mentioned earlier — those dogs sometimes do better with ingredients and routines aimed at “smoothing” that tension, alongside the diet and exercise changes that matter more. A dog who seems flat, clingy, and slow to recover from being startled reads more like a deficiency pattern, and I’m less quick to expect a calming chew alone to shift that picture — that dog often needs a broader workup first, not just a different bag off the shelf.

Give any product a real trial window before judging it — most owners quit after three days when these ingredients, at best, work cumulatively over one to two weeks — and track something specific: does your dog settle faster after the mail carrier, the vacuum, the doorbell, whatever the actual trigger is. If nothing changes after a fair trial, that’s useful information, not a failure on your part.

If your dog’s stress is mild, situational, and you’ve already started addressing the trigger — exercise timing, desensitization, a calmer departure routine — a calming chew built around chamomile, L-theanine, or ashwagandha at a disclosed dose is a reasonable, low-risk thing to layer in. It may help support a calmer baseline. It is not going to out-argue a genuine phobia, a pain-driven behavior change, or an underlying medical pattern, and if your dog isn’t improving within a couple of weeks of consistent use plus the environmental changes, that’s your cue to bring in your veterinarian rather than trying a stronger blend. For dogs whose anxiety is significant, sudden in onset, or paired with any physical symptom, a chew is the wrong first step entirely — that dog needs an exam, not a bag off the shelf.
